Burghley House and Gardens

Conceived by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I and built between 1555 and 1587, Burghley is a testament to the ambition and vision of the most powerful courtier of the first Elizabethan age.

The Garden Shop, located at the entrance of the Garden of Surprises, stocks a superb range of high quality plant, pretty garden related accessories and books as well as a wide range of souvenirs and gifts.

Burghley is one of the largest and grandest surviving houses of the 16th century and a magnificent example of the great Elizabethan ‘prodigy’ houses. Explore at your leisure and enjoy the wonderful history of the House, family and its impressive collection. With knowledgeable and approachable room stewards on hand to provide a wealth of information on the state rooms and their collections, and to answer any questions you may have. After this, take in the annual Treasury exhibition, vast parkland, Garden of Surprises and Contemporary Sculpture Garden.

The Courtyard Shop, situated within Chestnut Courtyard, offers an extensive range of fine foods and chocolate, lifestyle goods and accessories as well as jewellery and toiletries. There is always something for everyone with some of the gifts inspired by Burghley. We also offer an extensive range of books which include titles on the Cecil family and Burghley House as well as postcards, stationery, clothes and toys.

The Garden Cafe and the Orangery restaurant offer a free flowing service with a glorious outdoor seating area. Grab a hot cup of coffee and a bite to eat before heading into the Gardens or spending a day in the Park. Menu options include a range of sandwiches, salads, cakes and sweet treats.
