Mompesson House is an elegant 18th-century townhouse located in the heart of Salisbury’s Cathedral Close.

It is known for its peaceful walled garden, featuring traditional herbaceous borders and a pergola.

The house became home to Mrs Ann Portman and her three unmarried daughters, Ann Mary, Henrietta, and Wyndham,

when they moved to Salisbury in 1798 after becoming widowed and leaving their family home.

Mrs Portman died in 1814, but two of her daughters continued living there until their own deaths.

Henrietta was the only daughter to marry and later sold the house in 1846.

Today, the house is presented as it would have been during the Portman family’s time, offering an insight into Regency life.

Highlights include:A Regency-style parlour on the ground floor and children’s playroom upstairs with Regency-era games and toys

Salisbury

Salisbury is a historic cathedral city known for its timeless beauty and rich heritage.

At its centre stands Salisbury Cathedral, a masterpiece of Early English Gothic architecture.

Completed in 1258, it is renowned for having the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom and for housing one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta.

The cathedral close surrounding it is one of the largest and most historically significant in Britain, containing elegant Georgian and medieval residences.
