Monpesson House

Mompesson is an 18th-century town house in the heart of Salisbury's Cathedral Close,

with a tranquil walled garden with traditionally planted herbaceous borders and pergola.

In 1798, Mrs Ann Portman moved to Salisbury with her three unmarried daughters, Ann Mary, Henrietta and Wyndham.

After becoming a widow, she had to leave her family home and brought her daughters to live at Mompesson House.

She died in 1814 but two of her daughters continued to live at Mompesson until their deaths. Henrietta was the only daughter to marry and sold the house in 1846.

Explore the house dressed to reflect the Portman family’s time at Mompesson and discover more about the family and Regency life.

Highlights include a Regency parlour downstairs and a children’s playroom upstairs featuring Regency games and toys.

Following your visit to the house you will have time at leisure.

Salisbury

A Cathedral city of ageless beauty and captivating history.

At the city’s heart is Salisbury Cathedral, a beacon that has attracted visitors for centuries.

Gathered around the Cathedral is a modern medieval city, full of buildings crafted with the care of another age.

Traditionally English with an independent spirit, the city’s living heritage and lively culture rewards repeated visits.

It is a creative and independent hub which has captivated visitors and inspired innovation for hundreds of years.
