The High Street is full of independent shops, cafés, and Dickensian character.
There’s the impressive Rochester Castle for great views and the peaceful Rochester Cathedral.
At Guildhall Museum you can learn about the history of the area and the life and times of Charles Dickens.
Rochester Cathedral was founded in 604, making it England’s second-oldest bishopric after Canterbury.
The present building was begun by Norman bishop Gundulf in the 1080s and later expanded in the Gothic style.
Once a major pilgrimage site, it survived the Reformation, Civil War damage and Victorian restoration. Today, it remains an active Anglican cathedral.
